Iowa Lt. Gov. Adam Gregg is stepping down from his position to take a job that will allow him to focus on his family

Gregg's resignation is effective July 1.

Gregg, a Republican, has served as lieutenant governor since 2019.

In a statement, Gregg said he is "excited" about the new opportunity and that it will allow him to spend more time with his wife and two children.

"This was not an easy decision, but it is the right one for my family," Gregg said.

Gregg's resignation will create a vacancy in the lieutenant governor's office.

Under Iowa law, the president of the Iowa Senate, currently Republican Jake Chapman, will become lieutenant governor.

Chapman has not said whether he will run for lieutenant governor in 2022.

Gregg's resignation is the latest in a series of high-profile departures from the Reynolds administration.

In recent months, Reynolds has lost her chief of staff, her communications director, and her legal counsel.

Gregg's departure is a blow to Reynolds, who is facing a tough re-election campaign in 2022.

Reynolds has not yet commented on Gregg's resignation.
